Five Minute Friday – Focus

Five-Minute-Friday-4-300x300Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Minute Friday!
This week’s theme is “focus. To learn more about Five Minute Friday,
please visit Kate’s
blog for more details… Each week, a community
of bloggers come together with the common goal is to spend
five unedited minutes to write on a topic.

The idea behind focusing, is that one won’t become so-easily-distracted. I must confess. I am one who is easily distracted.

By mostly anything.

Then, I have days like today…

Amazing Focus.
(Days like these are too rare…)

I love days like today – where I can focus and solely pursue writing. Today, that meant editing a manuscript from an older blog series andd writing for this blog. There was nothing else to do, but it’s my chosen day of rest. But, just the opportunity to write without added pressures.

What helps you to focus?

There are things we all must do to help you focus, and would love to hear about them below.

In focusing, there are some things I must do –

  1. Soul Position: Get quiet before the Lord. This means, focusing on my Savior Jesus. Willingly go into my secret place, and begin to process things I have encountered over the week.
  2. Distractions: Limit outside distractions, so this might include putting on low music that will support me seeking after God and pursuing this next step.
  3. Rest: I must rest. When I am well-rested, I am far more capable of focusing than if I am unrested. This makes my rest time even more important.

If I hope to become a person who is productive in her life, I must devote myself to rest. When I come out of my rest day focused, it will set me up to succeed through the new week – as I seek after my God and discern His will for my life.

“[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work] (Heb. 12:2, AMP).”

It’s funny, that as I was reading your words I kept getting *distracted* by the ad running on the screen just below them! I had to scroll up to get it out of view. Just like you said. And the first thing I started writing about was getting distracted–but I got distracted from that and wrote the post next to yours on the linkup instead. Heh. I think I’ve gotten more distractible as more and more distractions flood our lives in this culture. Sometimes to get focused I have to just turn it all off, go sit silent alone somewhere, and wait for the jumble of thoughts teeming in my head to run down to silence too. Good tips here. Thank you.

Good point! It’s so hard to just let ourselves rest. Yet I think you’re right – it’s almost impossible to focus if we are not well-rested. It makes me a little nervous to think about, though. I know so many people who work in professions where intense focus is critical and yet the job schedule almost prevents adequate rest.
