“I Like Giving”

givingBrad Formsma is the creator of I-Like-Giving, a website viewed by countless, which encourages many to live more generous lives. Brad was inspired by his grandfather’s example to give generously. Formsma’s book, I Like Giving, is a self help based book, geared towards encouraging and inspiring 0thers to give.

Hilarious, joyful, and cheerful would be words to describe what happens when we give. 2 Cor. 9:7 says, “You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure.“ For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.””

In I Like to Give, Brad conveys the joy of giving that he and others have experienced. They give inspiration to help others, as they pursue living a generous life. Many share their hearts and motivations, as they reveal their experiences of what has happened as they have stepped out in faith to give to another human being. Many times, it was choosing to not fear but meet the needs of a complete stranger. The core focus is on the benefits of giving…Even remarks about how our world might change if we began to live generously.

While the book does provide some encouragement, it also lacks in an important area: scriptural references. In the beginning of the book, they briefly begin discussing being a follower of Christ and “asking and receiving” (see Matthew 7:8). I wish that motive for giving followed through in the entire book. It lacks biblical references, and scripture has so much to say on the topic of giving. How much wildly would our world change if we imitated Christ in our daily lives, taking up our cross, and devoting our lives to following Him–letting Christ be our motive for giving and who spurs us on as we seek to live generously.

I was given this free ebook by Waterbrook Multnomah, in exchange for a honest review. If you want a book on inspiring ideas on how to give, it’s a quick, easy read. It offers some good points that relate to giving. If you, like me, want scripture references to draw you closer to Christ while reading a book that is marketed as a book on “Christian living”, you might want to skip this one.
